Year 27 MLK Day: Community Service in Action

Year 27 of MLK Day was a meaningful day of service, collaboration, and community care. Thanks to the generosity of volunteers, partners, and donors, the event resulted in the collection of 352 winter coats, along with many bags of gently used clothing and hygiene items. These donations will support neighbors in need while also helping keep usable textiles out of the landfill.
In addition to the coat and hygiene drive, skilled local seamstresses led mending workshops and offered drop-in repairs throughout the day. Participants learned practical skills in sewing, repurposing, and upcycling, reinforcing the value of extending the life of clothing through repair and reuse.

The event was made possible through the support and collaboration of many community partners, including Cape and Islands United Way, Family Pantry of Cape Cod, Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters, the 204 Cultural Arts Municipal Building, Latinx in Action (Threads of Hope), Stitchology, and community instructors Julie, Debbie, and Becca. Cape Cod Cooperative Extension also participated by providing information on textile recycling and offering activities for children.

The success of the day was made possible by the many volunteers who donated their time to sorting items, supporting the free store, and assisting throughout the event. Special recognition goes to the Community Outreach & Development member team—Sophie, Sadie, Nina, Sara, and Ciara—whose planning, coordination, and commitment ensured the day ran smoothly.
Year 27 MLK Day reflected the strength of community partnerships and the shared commitment to service that honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.
