Barnstable County Remembers: Honoring the Lives Lost to Overdose
On August 18, 2025, the Barnstable County Department of Human Services hosted a gathering to honor community members lost to overdose. Families and loved ones placed purple flags of remembrance on the front lawn of the Superior Courthouse, each one a symbol of a life gone too soon. The event also featured signs with messages of encouragement and information about resources for individuals living with substance use disorder, as well as for their families, friends, and support networks. The signs are distributed across the Barnstable County campus. Light refreshments were served, giving attendees a chance to connect, reflect, and share in remembrance.
About International Overdose Awareness Day
Each year on and around August 31, communities around the world observe International Overdose Awareness Day. The day serves three important purposes:
- To remember without stigma those who have died from overdose.
- To acknowledge the grief of the family, friends, and loved ones left behind.
- To raise awareness and reduce stigma around substance use disorder while promoting education, prevention, and support.
Purple is the recognized color of overdose awareness, symbolizing compassion and remembrance. Events like the one held on Cape Cod provide opportunities to reflect on the human toll of overdose and recommit to community-based solutions.
