Assembly Looks to Charter Review for Cape Government’s Future
January 9, 2025 (Barnstable, MA) – The Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates held a special meeting to review the Cape Cod Home Rule Charter and other documents as the region’s legislature begins its 19th session.
“There are legal ways to change our charter and rules,” said Speaker Randi Potash. “We must follow the charter until we make and implement proper changes, or our government will slide into anarchy.”
Assembly leaders and Regional Administrator Michael Dutton gave presentations on the government’s structure, and charter review process.
“Charter review may be the most important task in front of the Assembly this year,” said Deputy Speaker Daniel Gessen . “It will be our responsibility to ensure that it’s conducted in a way that reflects the interests of our communities and the spirit of regional cooperation.”
A special Charter Review Committee appointed by the Assembly will begin work this March and recommend possible changes later this year.
