BARNSTABLE, MA (February 26, 2026)– Barnstable County officials, in coordination with local emergency management and town leaders, announced today that the following three regional storm shelters will close tomorrow, Friday, February 27, at 1:00 p.m.

  • Dennis–Yarmouth High School – 210 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth
  • Barnstable Intermediate School – 895 Falmouth Road, Hyannis
  • Cape Cod Regional Technical High School (Harwich) – 351 Pleasant Lake Avenue, Harwich

This unified closure reflects significant progress in power restoration across the region, declining shelter census numbers, and confirmed overnight medical coverage to support a safe transition for remaining guests.

Important Information for Shelter Residents

  • Breakfast will be the final meal served Friday morning.
  • Residents are encouraged to arrange family or personal transportation if possible.
  • Those requiring transportation assistance should notify shelter staff immediately.
  • Individuals with medical or accessibility needs must alert staff as soon as possible to ensure appropriate arrangements are made.

The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will assist with non-medical transportation needs. Coordination with healthcare providers and emergency services is underway for individuals with higher medical needs.

Utilities continue prioritizing restoration in areas where displaced residents are awaiting return home.

Demobilization and Facility Restoration

Following closure, shelter teams will begin demobilization, inventory, and sanitation efforts to restore facilities — including school buildings — in preparation for reopening.

Ongoing Support

Residents who believe they do not have a safe alternative following shelter closure should speak directly with shelter staff so options can be explored.

Barnstable County will continue to provide updates through official channels as recovery efforts progress.
