Feb. 22, 2026 | 6:00 AM — Barnstable County Storm Update: Major Winter Storm Expected

Current Headlines for Cape Cod and the Islands
The National Weather Service expects a high-impact winter storm to affect Cape Cod and the Islands Sunday evening through Monday.
➡️ Winter Storm Warning in effect for Cape Cod
➡️ Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Nantucket
➡️ Coastal Flood Warning for portions of the eastern Massachusetts coastline, including areas south of Boston and Nantucket
➡️ Storm Warnings in effect for all coastal waters
Expected Conditions on Cape Cod
Forecast confidence has increased significantly, and impacts across eastern Massachusetts are expected to be greater than earlier projections. The storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall, strong northeast winds, coastal flooding, and potential power outages across Cape Cod.
Snow
Accumulating snow is expected to begin Sunday evening, with the heaviest snowfall likely after 2 AM Monday through Monday afternoon. Significant accumulation is expected across Cape Cod, though Nantucket may see snow mix with or change to rain at times.
Travel
Travel conditions are expected to become difficult to impossible at times Monday. Periods of very low visibility and near-blizzard conditions are possible during heavier snowfall and strong winds.
Wind
Strong northeast winds are expected to develop overnight Sunday into Monday. Wind gusts of 40–60 mph are likely across Cape Cod, with isolated gusts near 70 mph possible, especially on the Outer Cape and Nantucket. Peak wind impacts are expected between approximately 3 AM and 5 PM Monday.
Power Outages
The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds may weigh down tree limbs and power lines, increasing the likelihood of scattered to widespread power outages.
Coastal Flooding
Minor to moderate coastal flooding is possible during the Monday morning and Tuesday high tide cycles. Vulnerable low-lying roads and coastal areas may experience flooding, beach erosion, and coastal inundation, with the greatest concern around the Monday morning high tide.
Marine Conditions
Dangerous marine conditions are expected late Sunday through Monday. Seas may build to 15–25 feet, with storm-force winds and hazardous visibility. Mariners are strongly urged to remain in port.
Preparedness Actions
Residents and businesses are encouraged to:
➡️ Charge phones and essential devices in advance
➡️ Have basic food, water, and medications on hand
➡️ Secure loose outdoor items ahead of strong winds
➡️ Limit unnecessary travel during peak storm conditions
➡️ Check in with neighbors, older adults, or anyone who may need assistance
➡️ Bring pets indoors and ensure they have adequate supplies
➡️ If using a generator, operate it outdoors and away from windows and doors
➡️ Continue to monitor local forecasts and official updates
