Winter Ice Safety: What Residents Need to Know

Beach shoreline partially covered with snow and ice, with frozen patches along the sand and water’s edge, under a blue sky with scattered clouds

In light of the tragic event that occurred in Eastham this past weekend, we want to remind residents to exercise extreme caution near and on ice. Our hearts go out to our Eastham neighbors during this incredibly difficult time, and we are deeply grateful to the first responders who are working so diligently in response to this incident.

Changing Conditions, Hidden Dangers

Seasonal changes can make ice conditions difficult to judge this time of year. Ice strength varies widely based on temperature, tides, currents, and recent weather, and it can change quickly even within the same body of water. No ice is ever completely safe. Conditions that appear solid near shore may be much thinner farther out, particularly where there is moving water or tidal influence.

As a general precaution, consider using extra care around frozen ponds, bays, and coastal areas, and keep a close eye on children and pets near the water’s edge. Cold water immersion can become life-threatening within minutes. The safest decision is to stay off the ice and enjoy winter activities from shore. A moment of awareness and caution can go a long way to preventing a dangerous cold-water emergency and helping everyone enjoy the winter more safely.
