Winter Car Emergency Preparedness on Cape Cod

Winter weather on Cape Cod can change quickly, bringing snow, ice, strong winds, coastal flooding, and power outages. Bridge traffic, limited evacuation routes, and rapidly deteriorating road conditions make it especially important to be prepared before getting on the road.
Keep a Winter Emergency Kit in Your Vehicle At a minimum, your kit should include:
· Warm blanket, hat, gloves, and extra socks
· Flashlight and phone charger or power bank
· Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
· Ice scraper, snow brush, and small shovel
· Sand or kitty litter for traction
· Jumper cables and a basic first aid kit
Prepare Your Vehicle Before Winter Storms:
· Check tires, battery, brakes, and windshield wipers
· Use winter-grade washer fluid
· Keep your gas tank at least half full—especially before storms or bridge travel
If You Become Stranded:
· Stay with your vehicle if possible
· Call for help and share your location
· Run the engine periodically for heat and keep the exhaust pipe clear
· Use hazard lights to stay visible
Plan Ahead:
· Check weather and tide forecasts
· Be mindful of bridge traffic delays and potential coastal flooding
· Avoid unnecessary travel during severe storms
A few simple steps can help keep you safe and reduce strain on emergency responders during winter weather events.
Preparedness starts before the storm.
