First West Nile Virus-Positive Mosquito Sample Detected in Barnstable County

The Falmouth Health Department and Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project report the first confirmed presence of West Nile virus (WNV) in a mosquito sample collected on June 24 in Woods Hole, Falmouth.

In response, catch basins and standing water were treated with larvicide to reduce mosquito larvae.

Protect Yourself:

  • Use EPA-registered repellents
  • Avoid outdoor activity at dusk and after dark
  • Dump standing water (tires, tarps, toys, gutters)

CCMCP Superintendent Gabi Sakolsky emphasizes:

“The mosquitoes that carry WNV breed in man-made containers—dump standing water and protect yourself.”
