Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners Approves ARPA Grant to Develop Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan in Truro

June 21, 2023 (BARNSTABLE COUNTY, MA) – The Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners approved an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant today to the Town of Truro in the amount of $139,000.00 to develop a comprehensive wastewater management plan that will enable the town to improve its wastewater treatment infrastructure.

Speaking on behalf of the Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners, Chairman Mark Forest expressed that “the Board of Regional Commissioners recognize the importance of improving our wastewater management plans, we are pleased to support the Town of Truro with this significant grant award.”

The Board voted to transfer $640,000 from unreserved general funds for ongoing groundwater treatment efforts at the former municipal fire training site.  The request for funding is a fraction of the total cost of the multi- year clean up estimated to cost Barnstable County upwards of $60 million dollars over the next 5 years.

The Board also voted unanimously to support a request from the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to name a coral reef in Buttermilk Bay as “Jaroslow Reef” after the late Dr. Gary Jaroslow, a professor at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, who discovered the unusual coral reef structure in 2017.
