Summary Performance Analysis of BANRT Field-Installed Systems

The Recommended Technology Panel (RTP) is a working group convened by Barnstable County to review, evaluate, and provide guidance on the use of Innovative/Alternative (IA) onsite wastewater treatment technologies. The RTP includes technical experts, regulatory partners, and regional stakeholders who assess scientific evidence, examine real‑world system performance, and support communities in selecting nitrogen‑reducing technologies that can help protect coastal water quality. This panel does not choose or recommend specific technologies. Instead, the panel evaluates performance data, summarizes key considerations, and provides homeowners, towns, engineers, and other stakeholders with the tools and resources they need to make informed decisions about nitrogen‑reducing septic systems that best fit their local conditions and goals.

To support this work, we conducted a detailed multi‑year analysis of the nitrogen‑removal performance of IA systems included on the Massachusetts Best Available Nitrogen Reducing Technologies (BANRT) list. The goal of the report is to better understand how well these systems meet their state‑approved Total Nitrogen (TN) performance limits when installed at single‑family homes across Cape Cod, the Islands, and Southeastern Massachusetts. The analysis uses only laboratory‑verified effluent data collected by licensed service providers, and includes systems with at least five sampling events to ensure data reliability. This evaluation provides insight into typical system performance, variability between technologies, and the real‑world factors—such as installation, loading, site conditions, and maintenance—that influence outcomes.

BANRT Field Installed Septic Systems Performance Summary (2019-2026)

Why this matters: Excess nitrogen from septic systems is a leading contributor to coastal water quality decline, affecting ecosystems, shellfishing, recreation, and long‑term habitat health. Understanding how nitrogen‑reducing systems perform in practice is essential for supporting watershed planning, regulatory decisions, and future nitrogen‑management strategies across the region.

Who this summary is for: This information is intended for homeowners, town officials, engineers, environmental organizations, and anyone interested in how IA septic systems support local water‑quality protection efforts. The materials below provide an accessible overview of system performance while also offering a deeper technical report for those seeking a more detailed evaluation.
