Want to Become a Cape Cod Master Gardener? Applications Are Open for 2027

Are you curious about what’s growing around you?

Maybe you’re experimenting with native plants. Growing vegetables. Trying to help pollinators. Figuring out what’s attacking a favorite plant. Or maybe you simply want to understand more about the plants, insects and soils that make up the landscape around us.

If you like asking questions, learning how things grow and sharing what you learn with others, the Cape Cod Master Gardener Program might be for you.

Applications are now open for the 2027 Master Gardener training program. Barnstable County residents are invited to apply by October 1, 2026.

What Is a Cape Cod Master Gardener?

Master Gardeners are community volunteers who work with Cape Cod Cooperative Extension to provide science-based gardening and horticultural information to people across Barnstable County.

Being a Master Gardener isn’t just about knowing how to grow a beautiful garden. It’s about learning, asking questions and putting that knowledge to work in your community.

Master Gardeners help residents identify plant and insect problems, answer gardening questions at the Horticulture Clinic, meet people at Ask a Master Gardener events and take part in educational programs throughout Cape Cod.

They also support programs including the Children’s Garden, Demonstration Garden, soil test clinics, Hydrangea Festival, Backyard Horticulture programs, Autumn Joy, the annual plant sale and more.

There are lots of ways to put what you learn to work.

Learn the Science Behind the Garden

The Master Gardener program begins with approximately 60 hours of training.

For the 2027 class, training runs from January through March, with classes held on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The goal isn’t simply to collect gardening tips. Participants build a foundation of horticultural knowledge they can use to understand gardening questions, find science-based information and help others make informed decisions.

You don’t need to know everything about gardening when you walk through the door. What matters is a willingness to learn and share what you learn with others.

Put What You Learn to Work on Cape Cod

Training is only one part of becoming a Master Gardener.

New Master Gardeners make a 60-hour volunteer commitment to be completed by October 31, 2027. About 30 of those hours are spent staffing the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension Horticulture Clinic in South Yarmouth from April through October.

At the clinic, Master Gardeners help residents with real questions, from identifying plants and insects to troubleshooting problems in their yards and gardens.

After the first year, active Master Gardeners complete 20 volunteer hours and five hours of continuing education each year.

It’s an ongoing opportunity to keep learning while helping other people put good gardening information to use.

Who Should Apply?

You don’t need a perfect garden — or even a big one — to be curious about horticulture.

The program is open to Barnstable County residents with a desire to learn and a willingness to share gardening information with others.

Because the program has limited capacity, candidates are selected through an application and interview process.

If accepted, the training fee is $150. Financial assistance is available. Participation is contingent upon a satisfactory CORI inquiry.

Ready to Dig In?

Whether your interest started with a vegetable garden, native plants, pollinators, containers or simply wondering “What is that?” when you find something new outside, there’s always more to learn.

The Master Gardener program gives you the chance to build that knowledge and share it with your Cape Cod community.

Applications for the 2027 Master Gardener Program are due October 1, 2026.
