When the Blizzard Hit, Cape Cod Came Together

snow melt after a storm

As the snow from February’s powerful blizzard finally melts away, Cape Cod residents are beginning to see the full extent of the damage the storm left behind. Thousands lost power for days, homes grew cold, and many families suddenly found themselves searching for warmth, safety, and support.

Emergency shelters opened across the Cape, offering hot meals, medical care, and a place to rest while crews worked around the clock to restore power. For some residents—especially older adults and those with health concerns—these shelters became a critical lifeline.

In a recent Cape Cod Times feature, reporter Susan Vaughn shares the story of Denis and Anne Briand of Yarmouth Port, who turned to the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School emergency shelter after losing power during the storm. Their experience highlights the extraordinary efforts of first responders, AmeriCorps members, volunteers, and community partners who worked together to care for residents during the emergency.
