BCREPC Issues Situational Report #001 Ahead of Winter Storm | January 23, 2026 | 4:30 PM

Storm Overview
The Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee (BCREPC) has issued Situational Report #001 in advance of a winter storm expected to impact Cape Cod and the Islands from Sunday through Monday.
What to Expect
Forecasts indicate a period of impactful winter weather, with snowfall expected to begin Sunday and intensify Sunday evening into early Monday. Snowfall totals and impacts will vary across the region and will depend on storm track, precipitation type, and banding. Hazardous travel conditions are possible, particularly overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
Regional Preparedness and Coordination
Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to prepare for the upcoming winter storm and extreme cold conditions:
- Limit travel during periods of heavy snowfall, especially Sunday night into Monday morning. If travel is necessary, allow extra time and use caution.
- Prepare for power outages by charging phones and medical devices, having flashlights available, and keeping extra batteries on hand.
- Check heating systems and ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
- Dress for extreme cold, including wearing layers, hats, gloves, and insulated footwear when outdoors.
- Bring pets indoors and ensure adequate shelter for animals.
- Check on neighbors, older adults, and anyone who may need assistance during cold or snowy conditions.
- Prepare vehicles with fuel, windshield fluid, and an emergency kit that includes food, water, blankets, and a flashlight.
- Follow guidance from local officials and utility providers, and avoid areas where crews are working to restore services.
Residents in need of shelter or warming assistance are encouraged to monitor local municipal updates and statewide resources, including Mass 211, for information on available services.
Support for Vulnerable Populations
Outreach and sheltering coordination is underway to support vulnerable populations ahead of the storm. Regional partners are working together to assess needs and ensure appropriate resources are available as conditions evolve.
State and Regional Coordination
BCREPC continues to coordinate closely with the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and other state partners. This Situational Report is intended to supplement statewide updates by providing a Cape Cod–specific overview of conditions and preparedness.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official local and state channels for updates and to take appropriate precautions ahead of the storm.
