Nor’easter Season is Here: How to Prepare on Cape Cod

While Cape Cod remains in hurricane season until the end of November, we are also transitioning into our next seasonal weather pattern: Nor’easters. These powerful coastal storms can bring strong winds, heavy rain or snow, and coastal flooding. With our fully canopied trees in the fall, Nor’easters can still cause significant damage—as many of us remember from the autumn storm a few years ago.

The Barnstable County Emergency Preparedness Division has begun its annual outreach season, conducting discussions across the Cape to raise awareness of these weather threats and to help residents take simple, effective steps to stay safe.

1. Build an Emergency Kit

Gather supplies to last at least three days in case of power outages or travel delays. Your kit should include:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Non-perishable food and water (at least 1 gallon per person, per day)
  • Prescription medications and a first aid kit
  • Warm clothing and blankets
  • A battery-powered or hand-crank radio

2. Plan for Power Outages

Power often goes out during strong storms. Charge devices before the storm arrives, have backup power options ready, and learn how to safely use a generator. If you rely on electricity for medical equipment, notify your utility company in advance.

3. Be Flood Ready

Heavy rain and storm surges can lead to dangerous flooding. Clear gutters and storm drains around your property, move valuables to higher ground, and avoid driving through flooded roads—turn around, don’t drown.

4. Make a Family Plan

Talk with your household about what to do if you need to leave quickly. Choose two meeting locations: one close to home and one farther away. Don’t forget to plan for pets, children, and anyone with special medical needs.

“Preparedness doesn’t need to be complicated. A little planning and a few simple steps now can make a big difference when the next storm hits. With hurricane season overlapping the arrival of Nor’easters, we want everyone on Cape Cod to be ready, safe, and resilient.” — William A. (Chip) Reilly III, Emergency Preparedness Director, Barnstable County
