Barnstable County Launches Free Private Well Water Testing Program

No-cost screening for emerging and traditional contaminants offered to Cape Cod residents

July 15, 2025 (Barnstable, MA) – The Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment, in partnership with environmental consulting firm Tetra Tech, is now offering free water quality testing for private well owners across Cape Cod. Cape Cod residents who rely on private wells are encouraged to apply online at: Forms.Office.com/r/pdjWYkeBQ7. Residents may also apply by phone by calling Tetra Tech at (508) 786-2297.

This testing, valued at over $400 per household, will assess well water for a broad range of potential contaminants, including PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other pollutants that may impact health and water quality.

“Private well owners are their own water utility,” said Jay Gardiner, Director of the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment. “This program is about empowering residents with the tools and knowledge they need to safeguard their drinking water and protect their families’ health.” Mr. Gardiner continued, “As an added benefit, the program will help us build a clearer picture of our region’s private well water quality while giving homeowners peace of mind.”

Why Should Residents Test Their Well Water?

Private wells serve nearly 20% of Cape Cod households. Unlike public water systems, private wells are not routinely monitored for safety, leaving homeowners responsible for their own water testing and treatment. Given the region’s sandy soils and vulnerable aquifer system, well water contamination can occur from both natural sources and human activities such as septic system leaching, industrial spills, and firefighting foam use.

Many drinking water contaminants are tasteless, odorless, and invisible, but can still pose significant health risks. Testing is the only way to confirm whether private well water meets safe drinking water standards. Testing helps ensure the safety of drinking water and provides valuable data to support Cape Cod’s ongoing efforts to protect public health and the environment.

Analysis of Contaminants

The County’s free testing program will check for:

  • Bacteria (total coliform)
  • Nitrates and sodium
  • Metals such as copper, iron, and manganese
  • pH and salinity levels
  • PFAS and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

How to Participate

Cape Cod residents who rely on private wells are encouraged to apply online  at Forms.Office.com/r/pdjWYkeBQ7 or by phone by calling (508) 786-2297. Slots are limited by town and region. Once selected, homeowners will receive a free sampling kit along with easy instructions for collecting their well water sample. Drop-off locations will be provided, and assistance is available for residents who need help with sample collection.

What Happens After the Sample is Taken?

  • Analysis will be conducted by Barnstable County’s Water Quality Lab.
  • Participants will receive a personalized report explaining their results.
  • If any contaminants are found above regulatory limits, the County and its partners will provide guidance and resources on next steps.
