Massachusetts Delegation Calls on White House to Reverse AmeriCorps Cuts

Massachusetts’ two U.S. Senators and all nine members of the U.S. House delegation have issued a formal letter urging the Trump administration to reverse its sweeping cuts to the AmeriCorps program. The $400 million rollback, executed in April by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has disrupted community-based service initiatives across the country, including more than $8 million in grant funding slated for Massachusetts.
The lawmakers describe AmeriCorps as a “cost-effective public-private partnership” and stress the consequences of the cuts, which have impacted 17 initiatives across the Commonwealth. These include environmental programs on Cape Cod, youth services in Boston, and education support in Western Massachusetts.
“AmeriCorps is one of our country’s most effective and beloved service programs,” said Senator Ed Markey, who coordinated the letter and serves on the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee. “These cuts threaten not only the programs themselves but also the people and communities they serve.”
The letter calls on the administration to:
- Immediately reverse the cuts,
- Restore AmeriCorps grants and staffing,
- And reaffirm the federal government’s commitment to national service.
It also poses six detailed questions to the administration, requesting responses by May 20, 2025.
