Barnstable County Continues Legacy of Public Health Leadership with the Appointment of James G. Gardiner as Director of Health and Environment

March 11, 2025 (Barnstable, MA) – Barnstable County proudly announces the appointment of James G. Gardiner as the new Director of the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment (BCDHE). Mr. Gardiner officially began his tenure on March 3, 2025. With decades of experience in public health and human services, he brings a proven track record in leadership, strategic planning, and community health advocacy, ensuring the continued strength and innovation of the region’s public health programs.

Mr. Gardiner most recently served as the Director of Public Health in Yarmouth, overseeing public health operations, financial management, and strategic community partnerships. His work emphasized expanding access to health services, fostering collaboration with state and federal agencies, and advancing innovative public health strategies. Prior to his role in Yarmouth, Mr. Gardiner held multiple leadership positions, including Commissioner of Health and Human Services for Worcester, where he managed a diverse portfolio of municipal divisions, from public health and elder affairs to homelessness assistance. His background also includes executive leadership roles with nonprofit organizations such as the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, where he strengthened public health advocacy efforts and secured sustainable funding for critical programs.

Since its establishment in 1926 as the first county health department in New England, BCDHE has played a vital role in protecting and improving public health across Cape Cod. The department provides essential services ranging from disease control and health education to emergency preparedness and environmental protection. Mr. Gardiner’s leadership will be key in evolving and expanding these initiatives to meet the region’s changing needs, ensuring that BCDHE remains at the forefront of addressing Cape Cod’s public health challenges.
