Barnstable County Leaders Respond to Governor Healey’s Decision to Pause Pocasset Mental Health Center Closure

February 25, 2025 (Barnstable, MA) – The Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners and the Assembly of Delegates acknowledge and appreciate Governor Maura Healey’s decision to pause the planned closure of Pocasset Mental Health Center. This step reflects the significant concerns raised by patients, families, health care professionals, and community advocates regarding the impact of this closure on vulnerable populations.

We are encouraged by the Governor’s commitment to engaging a broad group of stakeholders, including patients, families, labor representatives, local officials, and medical professionals, to conduct a further review of the facility and its vital services. “It is heartening to know that we have a Governor who listens, and we appreciate that,” said Sheila Lyons, Chair of the Board of Regional Commissioners.

“The Assembly of Delegates is proud to have provided a regional forum where residents from all 15 towns could voice their concerns about this deeply important issue,” said Assembly of Delegates Speaker Randi Potash.

While this pause is a positive step, we remain committed to advocating for sustainable, long-term solutions that ensure continued access to quality mental health care. The proposed reduction of 170 Department of Mental Health caseworkers remains a pressing concern, and we support efforts to address this issue in a way that prioritizes the well-being of individuals who depend on these services.

Barnstable County stands ready to assist in this process and remains committed to working collaboratively with state and local leaders to secure the best possible outcome for our residents.
