AmeriCorps Cape Cod hosts MLK Day Disaster Preparation Event
“A day on, not a day off.”
On Monday, January 20th, AmeriCorps Cape Cod (ACC) hosted its signature MLK Day of Service in partnership with the Southeastern Massachusetts (SEMA) chapter of the American Red Cross. This year’s event focused on equipping attendees with the knowledge and tools needed to prepare for a variety of emergencies, including house fires, flooding, foodborne illnesses, and cardiac events.
The event featured hands-on workshops, including CPR training, and fun activities for children in the Kids’ Corner, where they enjoyed crafts and stories. Attendees also visited resource tables from local partners like the Town of Harwich Animal Control, Barnstable County Emergency Planning Committee, and the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod. These organizations provided valuable information on how to stay safe and be ready for any emergency. Every attendee went home with an emergency preparedness kit of essential items like multitools, first aid supplies, mylar blankets, and more—just in case!
Reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy of service and unity, this event was a reminder that preparation is a shared responsibility. ACC is grateful for the support of donors, exhibitors, and volunteers whose contributions made this event a success. Thanks to their dedication, Cape Cod is becoming a more resilient and prepared community.
As a national service organization, ACC is committed to natural resource management, disaster preparedness and response, community education, and volunteer engagement. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day) is celebrated as a National Day of Service, a time for people nationwide to come together and make a positive impact on their communities. ACC and the American Red Cross were proud to lead this year’s effort on Cape Cod.
