Age-and Dementia-Friendly Cape Cod Resolution

In October 2024, Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners recently took a significant step toward fostering a more inclusive and accessible community by signing the Age- and Dementia-Friendly Cape CodResolution. This resolution supports the County’s application to join the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Network of Age-Friendly Communities and Dementia Friendly Massachusetts (DF MA), initiatives designed to help create a livable community for all.

With 24% of the County’s population aged 50–64 and 31% aged 65 and older as of 2021, Barnstable County recognizes the critical need to address the needs of an aging population. These numbers are projected to rise, underscoring the importance of integrating age-friendly and dementia-friendly policies into regional planning.

By joining the AARP Network and DF MA, Barnstable County aims to improve its efforts to ensure older residents can remain in their homes and communities as they age, regardless of income. This initiative aligns with the goals of both the AARP Network and the World Health Organization’s Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. Through this partnership, Barnstable County will receive access to valuable resources, guidance, and best practices for creating age-friendly public spaces, improving transportation options, expanding health services, and supporting social participation.

Benefits of Joining the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities:

  • Enhanced Regional Planning: Barnstable County will incorporate age-friendly and dementia-friendly policies into its regional planning efforts, improving infrastructure, transportation, housing, and public spaces.
  • Access to Best Practices and Tools: The AARP Network provides access to a wealth of knowledge, tools, and case studies from other communities, helping Barnstable County implement successful aging initiatives.
  • Support for Caregivers and Individuals with Dementia: The initiative will also focus on the needs of individuals living with dementia and their caregivers, ensuring that regional services and support systems are inclusive and accessible.
  • Community Assessments: Barnstable County will regularly assess its progress in becoming more age-friendly, allowing local leaders to make data-driven decisions and improve services over time.
  • Increased Collaboration: Joining the AARP Network fosters collaboration with public health agencies, nonprofits, and other community organizations, leading to a more comprehensive approach to aging.

By adopting this resolution, Barnstable County reaffirms its commitment to promoting successful aging for all residents. This action positions the County to take a leadership role in creating a community that is welcoming, supportive, and responsive to the needs of all, including older adults and those living with dementia.
