Federal Grant Secured for Sagamore Bridge Replacement

Sagamore Bridge, MA.

Friday’s announcement of a $993 million federal grant from the Bridge Investment Program (BIP) is a key development in the replacement of the Sagamore Bridge. This funding brings the total federal support to nearly $1.72 billion, alongside $700 million in state funds pledged by Governor Maura Healey’s administration.

After over a decade of discussions regarding the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges, the replacement work can begin. The Sagamore and Bourne Bridges provide the only vehicle access points for Cape Cod’s 230,000 residents, over 8,500 businesses, and more than 5 million annual visitors. Initially designed for 1 million trips per year, these bridges now handle 38 million trips annually, similar to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
