Cape Leaders Commend Amendment Lapsing Funding for Joint Base Machine Gun Range

Local leaders, including Barnstable County Commissioner Mark Forrest, praised an amendment in the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act that would end funding for the proposed machine gun range at Joint Base Cape Cod. Congressman Bill Keating’s effort will allow funding authorizations to lapse by September. However, concerns remain that a facility might still be built using existing funds and could be expanded later.

Commissioner Forrest emphasized the need for training but suggested Fort Devans as a more suitable location for such a range. Base officials argue that an on-site range would reduce training costs and time and have proposed measures to address environmental impacts.
