January 4, 2024 (Barnstable, MA) – Barnstable County Department of Human Services, in partnership with SAGECare—the world’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ+) people—will be offering three free trainings in early 2024 focused on supporting older LGBTQ+ adults. Virtual training dates and times are as follows:
- January 23, 2024, 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM EST: Supporting LGBTQ+ Older Adults
- February 15, 2024, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM EST: Supporting LGBTQ+ Older Adults
- March 19, 2024, 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM: Alzheimer’s Disease & Other Dementias
Online registration for these trainings is required and can be accessed at: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/25hf2my/lp/a64b57dd-eb3b-4802-84a5-210e19af3288. A ZOOM link will be sent to all participants prior to the selected training date. Each training is free and can accommodate up to 60 people.
The first two trainings, “Supporting LGBTQ+ Older Adults”, cover the same subject matter. The third training, “Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias” specifically addresses challenges related to facing those afflictions as an LGBTQ+ adult. Participants may register for one or all of the trainings. While the target audience is providers and stakeholders, anyone is invited to register for these learning sessions, where participant engagement will be warmly encouraged.
Mandi Speakman, Deputy Director of the Barnstable County Department of Human Services, stated: “We are excited to partner with SAGE to make these training courses available to all of Barnstable County. This collaboration gives us all access to SAGE’s leadership, dedication and expertise which helps us advance our mission of creating a Healthy Connected Cape Cod.”
Massachusetts has one of the largest populations of adults that identify as LGBTQ+ in the United States. With our own large LGBTQ+ community and the fact that almost half of Barnstable County’s population is over the age of 60, there is a growing need to address the unique challenges facing aging LGBTQ+ adults in our region, as well as their families and caregivers.
