AmeriCorps Cape Cod Hosts MLK Day Community Event to Unite and Serve Cape Cod

January 5, 2024 (Barnstable, MA) – On Monday January 15th, AmeriCorps Cape Cod will be hosting a special Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (MLK Day) community event dedicated to supporting local organizations in their mission to combat homelessness, food and housing insecurity on Cape Cod.  The event will take place at the Sturgis Charter School, located at 529 Main Street in Hyannis.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (MLK Day) is a federal holiday recognized as a National Day of Service—a “day on, not a day off.”  Observed on the third Monday in January every year, MLK Day encourages individuals to improve their communities through volunteering. For the past 25 years, AmeriCorps programs across the country have been entrusted with leading this nationwide effort.

The event will kick off with an “essential items” drive from 10 AM to 12 PM at the 529 Building at Sturgis Charter School.  Dedicated volunteers will be on hand to collect much-needed food, clothing, and outdoor gear, all of which will be distributed to individuals and families in need throughout the Cape Cod community.

Following the essential items drive, the event will continue with a community luncheon and resource exhibition from 12 PM to 2 PM. Everyone is invited to enjoy a warm meal thoughtfully prepared by the Family Table Collaborative while learning about the valuable services provided by local organizations committed to addressing homelessness and housing insecurity.

Kat Garofoli, Program Manager for AmeriCorps Cape Cod, says, “We honor Dr. King’s legacy by bringing people together for this fun MLK Day event. The donation drive and community luncheon are a way to bridge divides and create lasting change that will benefit all our Cape Cod neighbors.”
