October 18, 2023 (Barnstable, Mass.) – Barnstable County’s Center for Public Safety Training is pleased to announce a full day training event for local firefighters and emergency responders. ‘Lower Cape Skills Day’ is scheduled for Saturday, October 28, 2023. This training event is being held in Wellfleet to make it easily accessible to firefighters and emergency responders from Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown, however registration is open to all local firefighters and emergency responders.
The “Lower Cape Skills Day” is an opportunity for firefighters and emergency responders to enhance their skills and knowledge in critical areas of firefighting and rescue operations. The Cape Cod Center for Public Safety Training provides top-quality standards-based training. Training topics include car fires, forcible entry, roof ventilation, and using air bags and struts at motor vehicle crashes.
The event begins at 08:00 on Saturday October 28, 2023, at Wellfleet Elementary School, 100 Lawrence Road, Wellfleet (around the corner from the Wellfleet Fire Station). To register for the event, please submit an email to martin.qreene@capecod.gov, including your name, rank, and department.
Participants who wish to participate in training evolutions with fire training props must bring National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) compliant personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Detail on training sessions:
Car Fire Attack
Firefighters will receive a comprehensive review of car fire hazards, methods of attack, and essential insights into handling alternative fuels and electric vehicles (EVs). Practical applications will be emphasized during hands-on exercises to ensure participants gain valuable experience in real-world scenarios.
Forcible Entry, the Challenge of the Door
This segment will delve into the nuances of forcible entry, addressing the various types of doors, locks, and tools required. Firefighters will learn effective techniques for gaining access while considering the impact on ventilation within the structure. Practical applications will provide an opportunity for participants to master these essential skills.
Roof Ventilation:
Participants will engage in discussions centered on roof construction, tool selection, and the art of roof ventilation. The session will emphasize the use of ground ladders and aerial devices for effective roof ventilation. Hands-on training will allow firefighters to practice these critical techniques.
Using Air Bags and Struts at Motor Vehicle Crashes:
An exclusive session will be presented by Deputy Chief Miguel Rosado of the New Haven CT Fire Department, who also serves as the Owner/Lead Instructor for NorthEast Squad Concepts LLC. Chief Rosado will share his expertise on safely and efficiently managing emergencies involving air bags, struts, and stabilization techniques. This session will combine lectures with practical training, so participants should come prepared with full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or certified Tech Rescue gear in accordance with NFPA 1971 or NFPA 1951.
