Cape Cod Cooperative Extension Encourages SNAP Recipients to Take Advantage of Healthy Incentives Program Benefits in New Promotional Video

Information from Cape Cod Cooperative Extension/Buy Fresh Buy Local Cape Cod

Affordable access to fruits and vegetables is vital for community health

May 25, 2022 (Barnstable, MA) – The Cape Cod Cooperative Extension hopes to raise awareness of a benefit for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients who can obtain free fruits and vegetables by shopping at approved Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) vendors in Barnstable County; SNAP is formerly known as Food Stamps.

HIP vendors include approved farmers’ markets, farm stands, mobile markets, and community-supported agriculture (CSA) farm share programs.  The public can access the Buy Fresh Buy Local Guide featuring approved HIP vendors at https://www.buyfreshbuylocalcapecod.org/

The Cooperative Extension’s promotional video describes when a SNAP client purchases from a Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) approved local farm vendor, $40, $60, or $80 per month is returned to their SNAP balance, depending on family size. The savings help those with low incomes to afford and purchase more fruits and vegetables for their household while also supporting local growers.

The video aims to meet the challenges of raising awareness of these benefits for SNAP recipients and encourages healthy eating.
