Soil Absorption Could Be Breakthrough For Wastewater Treatment
Early data suggests that layered soil absorption septic systems could reduce nitrogen levels in residential wastewater by as much as 90 percent.
With a layered soil absorption system, wastewater is directed into a leach field where it is absorbed and denitrified through a combination of loam, sand, and sawdust.
On Thursday, January 21, George R. Heufelder of the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment updated members of the [falmouth] water quality management committee about the systems, which members believe could eventually be a breakthrough in alternative wastewater treatment.
“I have to say, this is about as exciting as things get in the wastewater field,” committee chairman Eric T. Turkington said following Mr. Heufelder’s presentation.
“Tremendous,” committee member Matthew C. Patrick said.
