September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day
Organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) with the World Health Organization (WHO) as co-sponsor, September 10th is a day to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented.
From the IASP Website:
The International Association for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to preventing suicide and suicidal behavior and alleviating its effects. IASP leads the global role in suicide prevention by strategically developing an effective forum that is proactive in creating strong collaborative partnerships and promoting evidence-based action in order to reduce the incidence of suicide and suicidal behavior.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates more than 700,000 people die due to suicide each year and that almost 77% of all global suicides occur in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). For every suicide there are many more who attempt suicide or have serious suicidal ideation. Suicidal behavior profoundly impacts families and communities and remains a universal challenge with millions impacted. The reduction of suicide mortality is of global importance and a vital public health consideration.
Suicide Awareness and Prevention on Cape Cod
As of 2024, Barnstable County, which includes Cape Cod, continues to face significant challenges regarding suicide rates. The county’s suicide rate is notably higher than the Massachusetts state average. While the state sees a rate of approximately 9.4 suicides per 100,000 people, Barnstable County’s rate is 1.5 times higher, standing at around 14.4 per 100,000. This elevated rate underscores the ongoing mental health struggles within the Cape Cod region.
The Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition (CISPC) actively works to reduce suicides through awareness campaigns, community education, and training programs. Efforts have been expanded in recent years, including partnerships with local organizations (such as the Barnstable County Department of Human Services) and mental health services to provide better support for those in crisis.
