Americorps Cape Cod Members Assist Silent with Spring’s Study on PFAS Exposure and Breast Cancer

In a community-driven effort, members of Americorps Cape Cod (ACC) joined forces with the Silent Spring Institute to canvass Hyannis neighborhoods last week. The aim was to enlist participants for a study investigating the potential link between PFAS exposure in drinking water and breast cancer. Conducted in collaboration with the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC), this study holds immense potential to inform policies safeguarding public health and empowering communities to reduce their exposures to persistent PFAS chemicals.

Exploring the Relationship between PFAS Exposure and Breast Cancer

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals commonly found in everyday products due to their water and grease resistance properties. However, these “forever chemicals” are known to persist in the environment and can potentially have adverse effects on human health.

The Silent Spring Institute, renowned for its research on environmental health, has taken up the crucial task of examining the potential association between PFAS exposure in drinking water and the incidence of breast cancer. By collaborating with the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, they aim to uncover valuable insights into the impact of PFAS on public health and contribute to evidence-based policies.
