About Winter Wednesdays
Winter Wednesdays began in 2017 as the brainchild of Morgan Clark who was the Health Director in the Town of Provincetown at the time. The vision was to create a program where people could come together during the darkest months of winter to learn new skills from their neighbors and have togetherness with others in the community in the hopes of alleviating the loneliness and isolation of winter. Classes were held at the Provincetown schools on Wednesday evenings. WW was initially a collaboration between Provincetown Department of Health, Provincetown Public Library, Provincetown Department of Housing and Economic Development, Wellfleet & Truro Health and Conservation Departments, and Provincetown Schools.
In 2018 and 2019 the program continued to expand with more classes and more participants. In 2020, due to the pandemic, the program was cut a couple weeks short.
In 2021 Winter Wednesdays became Winter Whenevers as the classes were held throughout the week on Zoom. The program offered two six weeks sessions to create more opportunities for connection. Because the classes were virtual, they could be offered five days a week in the evening and during the day.
In 2022 WW was a combination of in-person and virtual. In-person classes required masks and proof of vaccination.
In 2022 Outer Cape Community Solutions and the Truro Health Department joined the collaboration. Through a proposal written and submitted by OCCS, Winter Wednesdays received a $10,000 grant from the Cape Cod HealthCare Foundation to expand the program throughout the Outer Cape. With the expansion of classes, the 2023 season will provide community members from Provincetown to Eastham with the opportunity to participate in classes within each of their own communities.
Winter Wednesdays/Whenevers is committed to providing opportunities for learning, connection, and togetherness on the Outer Cape. WW is also committed to reducing barriers to access the program by providing each participant with supplies needed for their registered course(s) at no cost, along with free childcare while in-person classes are operating, and free transportation to and from classes.
