Wastewater’s Impacts On Natural Dye Plant Growth & Color

What if wastewater wasn’t waste at all? What if the valuable nutrients excreted from our bodies could be captured and recycled for useful means?

Out at Barnstable County’s Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC) they’re working on innovative ways to do just that.

In a recent partnership with Amy DuFault of the Southeastern New England Fibershed, the creative minds at MASSTC are working on using wastewater to grow plants that can be used to make natural dyes. Growers use nutrient rich water that would otherwise be “wasted” to grow plants for their trade. The roots uptake the nutrients, keeping them from wreaking havoc on our sensitive ecosystem. It’s a win win!
