Commissioners Give Final OK to Information Technology and Grant Management Services

Commissioners Thank Assembly for Restoring Funds for Regional Services

(Barnstable, MA) – On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, the Board of Regional Commissioners gave final approval for a supplemental funding package that restored funds for the county’s information technology program and the county’s resource development offices. The funding will allow county officials to go forward with service agreements with the Towns of Bourne and Harwich and also allow the county to continue managing important multi-year, county-wide grants such as the AmeriCorps program.

“We want to thank the Assembly of Delegates for restoring these funds,” said Chairman Sheila Lyons. “As towns are increasingly relying on Barnstable County to help provide needed services, it is so important that we all work together and share the same goals. The Commissioners look forward to working with the Assembly to make sure that future budget reviews are much smoother and more transparent.”

Last month, the Barnstable County Commissioners asked the Assembly of Delegates to restore funds to the Barnstable County Information Technology Department and the Resource Development office. The Commissioners advocated that the additional costs for these services were paid for with grant and service contract revenues. The County Commissioners also expressed concern that the Assembly’s proposed cuts would not only jeopardize services for the Towns of Bourne and Harwich but send a chilling effect on other Towns in need of county services.

At today’s meeting, the Commissioners approved restoring $97,457.20 to fund the activities of the County Information Technology Department which will fund an IT staff position and allow Barnstable County to continue providing contracted services to the towns of Harwich and Bourne.  Additionally, $41,420.33 was restored to the Resource Development Office to fund the salary of an existing grant fiscal manager who manages multi-year grants including the AmeriCorps Cape Cod grant.
