[January 7, 2022 – 6:45 AM ] MEMA WEATHER UPDATE – WINTER STORM

Update provided by Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)

The following spot report reflects increased snowfall amounts and storm timing.

A winter storm is currently impacting the state this morning through tonight. The heaviest snowfall will occur between 6 and 9 AM this morning, with snowfall rates of greater than 1-2” per hour possible for a 2 to 3 hour period in eastern Massachusetts. End timing for this event will vary from 10 AM to 8 PM, west to east, as the storm pulls away late Friday.

Total snowfall accumulation from this event is forecast to be 2-6” in western MA, and a widespread 4- 8” in central and eastern MA, with localized 8-12” amounts possible along the coast. For the Cape and Islands, areas west of Hyannis can expect 4- 6” of snow, and the outer Cape and Islands 2-4”.

During the storm, sustained winds are expected to be 10 to 20 mph.

Dry, cold, and blustery conditions are forecast for Friday night into Saturday. Little if any snowmelt is expected. Odds for snowmelt improve on Sunday due to a wintry mix to rain event. Refreezing is possible Sunday night as temperatures fall into the 20s.

MEMA Operations

The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) is operating at Level 2 (Enhanced Watch) as of 5 AM this morning. The MEMA East and West Regional EOCs in Tewksbury and Agawam have also activated as of 5 AM.
