DPH Awards Multi-year Grant to Barnstable County Tobacco Control Program

Barnstable County’s Department of Health and Environment was among 16 municipal health departments that received funding from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for a total of $1.5 million.

The County received an annual award of $122,000 over the next four years to support its Tobacco Control Program that collaborates with neighboring towns on Cape Cod, the Islands, and Plymouth County. Bob Collett is the program director.

The funding is a combination of state and federal dollars that will support comprehensive tobacco control programs based on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Best Practices.

◦Protect youth from exposure to tobacco and vaping industry tactics and prevent youth initiation of tobacco/nicotine use
◦Protect residents from second-hand smoke
◦Ensure all Massachusetts uses of tobacco/nicotine have access to cessation resources
◦Identify tobacco-related disparities and target efforts toward those disproportionately affected

The Resource Development Office at Barnstable County provided technical assistance and grant writing support.
