State approves Cape plan update

Gov. Charlie Baker has approved an update of a regional water-quality management plan for Cape Cod, sending it late last week to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for review.

Town, county, and state officials hope the plan will reinvigorate a stalled water cleanup effort on the Cape, get wastewater treatment plans passed and implemented and help restore the health of the region’s coastal and inland waterways.

“This is definitely, to date, the best step forward in addressing the issue with buy-in from local communities, state and federal officials and local chambers of commerce,” Matthew Beaton, the state secretary of energy and the environment, said Saturday, adding that it is unfortunate it took so long to address the problem but the state is committed to solving it.
