A Smarter Way to Manage Your Septic System–Customized to Fit your Needs
For many homeowners, maintaining an innovative/alternative (IA) septic system can feel overwhelming. Costs fluctuate, service quality varies, and keeping up with inspections, sampling, and maintenance can be a challenge. As more IA systems are installed to protect water quality, the need for a reliable, structured approach becomes increasingly important. That’s where the Septic Utility Program (SUP) comes in. Our program offers a cost-effective and dependable way to manage your system, ensuring it functions properly while reducing the burden on homeowners and town staff.
We understand that every town’s needs are different, which is why we offer flexible service options. Whether you want full-service maintenance or just need help tracking compliance, the SUP provides solutions tailored to your needs.
Comprehensive Operation and Maintenance (Full O/M)
For homeowners and towns who want complete peace of mind, our full O/M service covers everything necessary to keep your system running efficiently for one annual fee:
- Regular inspections as required by MassDEP and local regulations
- Water sampling and certified lab processing
- Routine service calls, with up to three additional non-routine calls after the first year
- Septic tank pump-out (every 3 to 5 years)
- Replacement of minor parts
- Support for local businesses through subcontracting

Sampling and Inspecting (Limited O/M)
If you prefer a pay-per-visit model, our limited O/M service ensures your system remains compliant with regulatory requirements:
- Two to four inspections per year, based on system type and local requirements
- Certified lab sampling (homeowners pay lab fees)
- Prompt identification and reporting of issues needing maintenance

Operation and Management Oversight
For a low annual fee, we provide essential oversight to help homeowners and towns stay on top of their system’s regulatory requirements:
- Track O/M contracts and notify homeowners of renewals
- Identify systems missing required inspections or sampling
- Analyze test results to flag underperforming systems
- Investigate technical, operational, or environmental causes of issues
- Communicate with homeowners and operators to resolve problems (three to four attempts before referring to local health officials)

Installation Oversight
Proper installation is critical to long-term system performance, and the SUP provides oversight to ensure everything is done correctly:
- Competitive bidding to lower costs for multiple projects
- Oversight of installations to confirm adherence to approved designs and regulations
- Coordination with Aquifund for financial assistance and planning
By choosing the SUP, you can be confident that your IA septic system is well-maintained, compliant with regulations, and operating at peak efficiency. Our program not only protects your investment but also helps safeguard your community’s water quality for generations to come.
