Overview:  Children’s Cove: The Cape & Islands Child Advocacy Center is recognized as the foremost advocacy center providing comprehensive and coordinated multidisciplinary services to child victims of child sexual abuse, serious physical abuse, witness to domestic violence, and child exploitation and trafficking on Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard.

Summary: The Mental Health Clinician’s role is to provide evidence-based treatment to children ages 4-17 experiencing trauma. The Mental Health Clinician also provides psycho-educational services to families on a variety of topics to include impact of trauma on both children and adults, possible behavioral impacts, human trafficking, problematic sexualized behavior (PSB), sexual abuse, witness to domestic and physical violence. 

Responsibilities: The Mental Health Clinician will provide empathetic and culturally sensitive onsite and telehealth evidence-based counseling services for child victims of abuse. Duties include child victim assessment, early-stage diagnosis, and development of individual treatment consistent with professional standards. Is responsible for active participation on multidisciplinary teams, high quality written and verbal reporting, and providing factual and expert witness testimony for the judicial system as needed.

Provides psychoeducation regarding client experiences to client and caregiver(s). Administers and assesses appropriate mental health assessment tools. Actively participates in department meetings, committees, conferences, and in-services. Records and reports clinical documentation in a timely fashion and formatted in a professional manner.

Master’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or related field from an accredited university. LICSW/LCSW/LMHC preferred or be license eligible.  Must have 3-5 years’ experience in providing clinical treatment to children and families; experience providing other related services to children experiencing trauma considered. Training and experience in an evidence-based trauma modality is a preferred. Working knowledge of dynamics of child abuse and neglect, parent-child dynamics, and child development essential. Training in additional trauma modalities Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), ARC (Attachment, Regulation and Competency), CFTSI (The Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention), EMDR (Eye Movement and Desensitization and Processing), PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy) is a plus. Fluency in Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese is desired. 

Special Conditions:

  • This position requires flexibility around scheduled work hours to accommodate some evening and weekend appointments.
  • All services at Children’s Cove are free of charge so there is no requirement for billing of services.
  • This position is a hybrid model with time dedicated to telehealth services for clients, so an appropriate and confidential work-from-home space is recommended.
  • Paid training and continuing education credits (CEUs) will be provided on various evidence-based trauma modalities and other topics relevant to the role.
