Barnstable County’s Department of Human Services Awarded 3-Year SHINE Grant
June 28, 2022 (Barnstable, MA) – Barnstable County Department of Human Services has announced it has been awarded a three-year grant from the states Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA) to continue to serve as the Region 12 Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone (SHINE) office.
Coordinating regional SHINE operations since 2014, this award maintains operational continuity for an additional three years. Within the grant award, following the initial three-year term, and at EOEA’s discretion, an additional three one-year terms may be exercised providing for a total contract term of up to six (6) years. The three-year award totals $256,842.
SHINE provides free health insurance information, counseling, and assistance to residents of Barnstable County and the Islands who are Medicare eligible and their caregivers. Counseling services are available year-round, with the Medicare open enrollment period occurring annually from October 15 through December 7.
“SHINE continues to be one of our most critical services County-wide,” said Human Services Director Joseph Pacheco. “We encourage all eligible residents to reach out and see how these services may be of assistance.”
Open Enrollment 2021 saw the SHINE Office serve 5,925 unique individuals who cumulatively realized a benefit savings of over $800,000.
ABOUT SHINE: SHINE is administered by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs in partnership with elder service agencies, Councils on Aging, and other public and private community-based organizations. SHINE is a State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and is partially funded by the Federal Administration for Community Living.
