[February 3, 2022 | 9:30 AM] Wintery Mix Friday – Travel Impacts – MEMA Situational Report #1
The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting a wintery mix this Friday that may impact morning commuters. Rain changes to sleet Friday with a brief period of light freezing rain during the transition then end as light snow late Friday. A flash freeze is expected as temperatures quickly drop below freezing starting between 3-6 AM along/north of Route 2, then 7-10 AM in Worcester and Boston, and 12-3 PM South Coast/ Cape Cod/ Islands. Widespread ice accumulations will total 0.10 – 0.25 inches for most of the state and 0.01 – 0.10” for Cape Cod and the Islands.
In terms of snowfall, the bulk of snow/ sleet accumulation will be north of the Mass Pike between 1-2”. South of the Mass Pike will get up to 1”. The highest accumulations will be mainly along and north of Route 2 and over Berkshire County with localized north western pockets of 4-6”.
A sharp drop in temperature is expected Friday night into Saturday with highs in the 20s and 15-25 mph winds. This will cause hazardous travel conditions into Saturday morning.

- Slippery travel, especially from Hartford, Worcester, Boston, and points north during the Friday morning commute.
- Any freezing rain is not expected to cause significant icing on trees/wires.
- Rainfall prior to changeover may wash away road treatments.
