[10/25/2021] Coastal Storm Monday (10/25) to Wednesday (10/27)

Incident or Event Overview

Situation 

The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting a potential coastal storm Tuesday morning through Wednesday. The system will bring prolonged periods of rain, flooding, damaging winds, and minor coastal flooding and erosion. The highest confidence in strong winds is across Southeastern Massachusetts which could produce damaging wind gusts up to 50 mph. The strongest winds are expected late Tuesday into Wednesday morning in Central and Eastern Massachusetts. Power outages will be possible. Widespread 3-6 inches of rain is forecasted on Monday night through Wednesday with locally higher amounts possible. Heavy rain will begin in Western Massachusetts starting late Monday night and end mid-day Tuesday. Central and Eastern Massachusetts will see the heaviest rain Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning. The greatest chance for coastal flooding will be during the Wednesday morning high tide. 

Impacts/ Potential Impacts 

  • Heavy rainfall as much as 3-6 inches with locally higher amounts. 
  • Urban street flooding and river/small stream flooding possible. 
  • Damaging winds. Power outages possible. 
  • Wind damage may be exacerbated by nearly fully leafed trees, while clogged storm drains will be a concern for flooding. 
  • Potential for minor coastal flood and erosion- Astronomical tides are low, but the duration of E/NE flow will contribute to flooding.
