DY High Students Produce Series of PSA Videos Ranging from the Dangers of Vaping to Underage Drinking with SAPC Program Grant

Barnstable, Massachusetts – In April 2019 the Barnstable County Department of Human Services awarded Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School a mini-grant in the amount of $2,300 to fund the creation of a series of public service videos written and produced by students.  The videos cover the topics of the dangers of vaping and the dangers of hosting an underage drinking party and are targeted at students on Cape Cod in grades 6-12 and their parents:

  • The Vaping Industry and Marketing to Children
  • What’s in a Vape
  • Outsmart the Vaping Industry
  • About the Social Host Law

Students enrolled in the Broadcasting Technology course at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School completed a total of five PSA videos at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.  The videos are accessible on YouTube (search “D-Y High School PSA Videos”) and will be aired on Dennis-Yarmouth Public School’s educational access Channel 22, the Town of Yarmouth and Dennis public channels, and the Cape Cod Community College media access channel for Cape-wide viewing.

Dennis-Yarmouth Broadcasting Technology Instructor Reade Whinnem said, “Much of what we did was inspired by Dr. Jeffrey Spillane, who spoke at DY last spring.  I had each student come up with specific ideas for projects. Once we had our ideas, I mapped out the production, and then the students and I took a day and a half to do the shooting.”

Kim Slade, Substance Use Program Manager at Barnstable County’s Department of Human Services says, “We are proud to support DYRHS in their efforts to prevent underage substance use.  With a cultural acceptance of alcohol use and the increase of youth vaping on Cape Cod, DYRHS is choosing to address these issues head on to guide youth and empower all community members to believe that their choices matter.”

Funding for the mini-grant was provided by the Massachusetts Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC).

About the (SAPC) Grant

The Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC) grant is part of a comprehensive approach to substance use prevention across the Commonwealth.  With funding provided by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, the SAPC program in Barnstable County is part of a coordinated regional prevention effort.  SAPC uses evidence-based strategies including policy, practice, and system change to reduce substance misuse and build capacity throughout the community to address underage drinking and other illicit substance use.  SAPC partners include Sandwich Substance Use Prevention Committee Falmouth Commission on Substance Use, Mashpee Substance Use Taskforce, Dennis Substance Use Disorder Advisory Council, Yarmouth Substance Awareness Committee, Lower Cape Prevention Partnership – Harwich and Chatham (Monomoy Schools) and the Nauset School District. The SAPC Grant is administered by the Barnstable County Department of Human Services and its activities are integrated with the Barnstable County Regional Substance Use Council (RSAC) and the Massachusetts Opioid Abuse Prevention Collaborative (MOAPC).
