Emergency shelter closed at Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School
BARNSTABLE (MA) July 25, 2019 – The Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning (BCREPC) Committee held a conference call at 10 a.m. on Thursday to review recovery efforts after Tuesday’s devastating tornadoes.
Emergency Shelter Update
The BCREPC has closed the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School emergency shelter as of 10 a.m. Thursday, July 25, 2019. The BCREPC would like to thank the agencies that made shelter operations possible: Yarmouth-Dennis Community Emergency Response Team (YDCERT), the American Red Cross (ARC), Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), Cape Cod Disaster Animal Response Team (CCDART), AmeriCorps, Cape Cod Healthcare, and Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA). Particular thanks go to the Salvation Army for their mobile feeding assets, a critical component of emergency response and recovery.
Power Restoration
During the call, electric utility Eversource reported that under 3,000 people were without power. Crews continue to work clearing downed trees and repairing the distribution system. Safety and Recovery Tips
The BCREPC urges citizens to avoid downed power lines, poles, and trees because of the risk of electric shock. Those with generators should ensure they are well ventilated and never placed inside a basement or garage. Make sure carbon monoxide detectors are working. Anyone planning to uproot a stump or tree should call Dig Safe at 811 to ensure there no gas lines or electric cables in the area.
- Call 9-1-1 to report emergencies, including downed power lines. Call 2-1-1 to obtain disaster information.
- If your home or property is damaged, take photos or videos to document your damage, and contact your insurance company.
- Be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions and those who may need additional assistance.

Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee (BCREPC)
The BCREPC was founded in September 2002 to assist the communities on Cape Cod and the Town of Nantucket with addressing hazardous materials emergency planning and response as required by the federal government. Today, the BCREPC has expanded its scope to include “All Hazard” emergency planning issues such as storm response, sheltering and grants management.
