Mercy Otis Warren Cape Cod Woman of the Year Committee Presents Bourne Middle School Student with Freedom of Expression Award
BARNSTABLE, MA – May 8, 2019 Caroline Smith, a student at Bourne Middle School, is the winner of this year’s Mercy Otis Warren Freedom of Expression essay contest. The competition, open to all fifth graders on Cape Cod, honors the legacy of the historian, poet and polemicist Mercy Otis Warren, who grew up in West Barnstable.
“We received many wonderful essays from all over the Cape,” Mercy Otis Warren Cape Cod Woman of the Year Committee Chair Judy Walden Scarafile said. “Caroline’s really stood out. She asked, ‘Why wait to grow up when I can change the world now?'”
The committee, which will announce its 18th annual Mercy Otis Warren Woman of the Year recipient later this month, started the essay contest last year to encourage boys and girls to think about ways they could participate in their communities.
“I believe in speaking out for what is right and being a helping hand for those who need a voice,” Caroline wrote in her essay. An active Girl Scout, she has been working with her troop to collect supplies for animal shelters and wants to find ways to make the Bourne and Otis Air Station rotaries safer.
Caroline will be recognized and will read her essay at the Mercy Otis Warren Cape Cod Woman of the Year ceremony June 5 at 7 p.m. at Tales of Cape Cod in Barnstable Village. All are invited to attend this free event.
