Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day Service at Federated Church Honors Those Who Passed in 2018

With music, candles and prayers, the Cape Cod community will once again join together on Friday, December 21st to honor the homeless men and women who died over the course of the last year. The Homeless Persons’ Memorial Service is an opportunity to acknowledge the passing of people who may not have family to honor and celebrate the successes they achieved and the friendships they made.

The National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Health Care for the Homeless Council view National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day as an occasion to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember the individuals who have paid the ultimate price for our nation’s failure to end homelessness. On December 21, the longest night of the year, events will be held across the country to highlight the cold, harsh conditions the homeless face during the winter. This year 36 homeless or previously homeless people have died on Cape Cod.

The memorial will begin at 5:00 PM at the Hyannis Federated Church on Main Street, Hyannis. Co-sponsors include: Cape Cod Council of Churches, Federated Church of Hyannis, Duffy Health Center, Housing Assistance Corp (HAC), Community of Jesus, Team M25, the Vinfen Outreach Team, and the Barnstable Police Department – truly a community gathering. An informal gathering with refreshments will be held in the Church Hall immediately following the service. The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

The mission of Duffy Health Center is to provide comprehensive, integrated health care and support services to persons who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness on Cape Cod, and to improve the quality of life for vulnerable populations through community collaborations, leadership, and advocacy.
