Dennis Union Church Congregation Raises over $1,100 from “Loose Change” Collection dedicated to local Children’s Organizations.
April 17th, 2018, Dennis. Since creating its “Change for Children” fund in March, the Dennis Union Church raised $1,126.14, solely from members donating their loose change. Yesterday, the loose change was converted to two checks and presented to Children’s Cove and Food 4 Kids — two organizations focused on children’s needs on the Cape and Islands.
“We simply asked, ‘Give us your loose change’ and were overwhelmed with the response from our congregation,” said Reverend Terry O. Martinson, Dennis Union Church’s Interim Pastor. “It turned out that many members had been saving change in jars and cans for months, if not years.”
Buckets were placed in the Church starting on Sunday, March 4th and quickly filled up throughout the month, resulting in a substantial amount of change collected. The Church reached out to Cape Cod Five to determine the best way to count the money, and on Tuesday, April 17th, Reverend Martinson delivered buckets of change to the Bank for counting.
Reverend Martinson stated, “We were very fortunate when Cape Cod Five offered the use of their coin counting machine so that we could quickly turn our loose change into bills for our donation.”
The amount collected was donated equally between Children’s Cove and Food 4 Kids. Children’s Cove has been the Cape and Island’s Child Advocacy Center since 1997, providing coordinated and comprehensive multidisciplinary services to child victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, witness to domestic violence and child sexual exploitation and trafficking. Food 4 Kids is a non-profit organization which works to alleviate childhood hunger on the Lower/Outer Cape and beyond by bringing together the Church of the Holy Spirit and local communities in the Summer Food Service Program.
