Patient and Family Education Day: Substance Use Disorders

Massachusetts General Hospital’s Psychiatry Department is presenting a free educational program exclusively for substance use disorder patients, families, and friends. This event will provide an opportunity for people with substance use disorders, their family, friends, treaters and others to learn about substance use disorders and become actively involved in the treatment and recovery of someone they care about. This event offers an update on new research findings and important clinical topics for people with substance use disorders and their families.  The Department will share its vision of modern addiction treatment that is preventive, patient-centered, and oriented towards recovery and physical health.

Topics include brain-based risk factors for addiction, the effects of addictive drugs on the brain, society’s response to the opioid crisis and what it teaches us about marijuana, psychiatric illness and addiction, safe medication storage and disposal, risk factors for overdose, and a demonstration on how to use Narcan.
