Barnstable County Regional Emergency Shelter Drill at Falmouth High School

AmeriCorps volunteers Tara Racine and Roy Hawthorn act as clients at the Falmouth Shelter Drill

On Saturday, April 22, 2017, an Emergency Shelter drill was conducted at Falmouth High School from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Falmouth shelter drill tested the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Shelter Program (BCRESP) as well as all of the various shelter partners. This drill gave each organization a chance to test the effectiveness of their emergency protocols. While some volunteers participated in their shelter organization’s activity, others acted as clients participating in realistic shelter scenarios. These ranged from animal related issues, to dealing with illness and injury. Each issue was resolved and evaluated by shelter volunteers.

This opportunity allowed volunteers to respond to many real problems they would encounter in shelters. The drill was followed by a debrief and evaluation of the events. This allowed volunteers to share challenges or ask questions so that they are better prepared for the next real emergency.

The emergency shelter partners that participated in the shelter drill included: AmeriCorps Cape Cod; American Red Cross; Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES); Barnstable County All Hazards Incident Management Team (BCAHIMT); Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee (BCREPC); Cape Cod Disaster Animal Response Team (CCDART); Falmouth Community Emergency Response Team (CERT); Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps (MRC); Falmouth Fire, Falmouth Police; Falmouth High School Facility Management; and the Falmouth Local Emergency Planning Committee.
