Regional shelter opening moved up to 6:30 p.m. Monday

BARNSTABLE (MA) January 26, 2015 – The Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee (BCREPC) held a conference call at 10 a.m. Monday to finalize plans for the upcoming winter storm.  Given the progressive nature of the storm, the shelter opening time has been set for 6:30 p.m. Monday evening rather than Tuesday as originally scheduled.

  • Falmouth High School, 874 Gifford Street, Falmouth
  • Sandwich High School, 365 Quaker Meetinghouse Road, Sandwich
  • Barnstable Intermediate School, 895 Falmouth Road, Barnstable
  • Dennis-Yarmouth High School, 210 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth
  • Cape Cod Regional Technical School, 351 Pleasant Lake Avenue, Harwich
  • Nauset Regional High School, 100 Cable Road, Eastham

Important things to know about regional shelters

  1. A shelter provides a secure facility, a cot to sleep on, food and water, basic first aid, and functional assistance. Beyond that, it is up to you to pack and bring the essentials of your life including extra clothing, medications, and any medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, and oxygen concentrators.You should arrive with a three-day supply of essentials INCLUDING medications.
  2. If you live at home with the assistance of a caretaker, the caretaker must come to the shelter with you. If you have a visiting nurse, make sure you bring your medical supplies and let your nurse know which shelter you will be staying at.
  3. If you are bringing infants, babies, or toddlers to a shelter make sure you bring a three-day supply formula, food, diapers, wipes, changes of clothing, toys, and a “pack ‘n play” or portable crib and bedding.

Before you leave home

  1. If you leave home when the power is still on, turn the heat up a bit. This will slow down the cooling process if power is lost.
  2. Before you leave, turn on your porch or front light so it is easy to tell when the power comes back on. We don’t want people returning to homes without power.

Pets

All regional shelters EXCEPT the Cape Cod Regional Technical School in Harwich will accept pets. Pet owners can go to any of the other shelters for pet care. You must check your pet in before checking into the shelter yourself. Your pet must have a rabies certificate. Please bring at leaset a three-day supply of pet food and kitty litter. The pet shelter provides crates. You cannot sleep with your pet(s). Once your pet(s) are in the animal shelter, you will be able to see them during visiting hours.

Transportation

Weather permitting, the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) will offer transportation to the regional shelters with its Dial-A-Ride Transportation (DART) service. Those needing transportation must call the CCRTA 1-800-352-7155 by 5 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2015, to schedule a ride.

Multi-Agency Coordination Center

The Barnstable County Incident Management Team will activate the Multi-Agency Coordination Center (MACC) at 4 p.m. on Monday.
