“Cape Cod Prepares” Program to Mark Start of Hurricane Season

BARNSTABLE, MA – On Monday, June 2, 2014, at 12 p.m. the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee (BCREPC) will sponsor a short program called “Cape Cod Prepares” marking the start of the 2014 hurricane season. Held on the front steps of the Superior Court House on Route 6A in Barnstable Village, the purpose of the program is to acknowledge the volunteer agencies that support the region’s preparedness programs. The public is invited to attend.

According to the National Hurricane Center, “History teaches that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. By knowing your vulnerability and what actions you should take, you can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster.”

Sean O’Brien, BCREPC Coordinator says, “Our emergency response capabilities rely on the many volunteers who generously donate their time to assist their fellow residents in times of need. At the start of the 2014 hurricane season, we are using this program to thank our volunteers, acknowledge the groups and agencies they work for, invite citizens to become volunteers, and remind folks about hurricane preparedness.”

In addition to the BCREPC, other agencies and groups supporting emergency preparedness and response include the American Red Cross, AmeriCorps Cape Cod, Amateur Radio Emergency Services, Yarmouth-Dennis Community Emergency Response Team, Barnstable County Community Emergency Response Team, Cape Cod Disaster Animal Response Team, Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps, Citizens Corps Council and the Barnstable County Incident Management Team.
